America's most celebrated architect is particularly noted for two famous projects, the NY Guggenheim Museum and the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael. Both were in progress at the time of his death at 91 years of age.
ALWARD CONSTRUCTION was asked by the original owners to rebuild their 1949 Buehler House destroyed by fire in 1994. The Buehlers hired Bill Simpson to develop permit plans for the rebuild but retained Walter Olds, Wright's original apprentice, to oversee the architectural detailing and construction of the project. Alward's Master Builder, Cregg Sweeney, had previously worked on Mr. Olds' own house while employed by us. Mr. Olds, who oversaw the original construction of the Buehler House in 1949, directed Cregg in its rebuilding with over a hundred half and full scale drawings detailing everything from concrete and drainage to custom light fixtures built by Alward.
Because of the successful rebuilding of the Buehler House, we were chosen by Stanford University to work on the famous Honey Comb Hanna House, partially destroyed by the Loma Prieta earthquake. This house is considered to be one of Wright's 17 most significant projects. We have been invited back many times to work on the Hanna House.
Meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail - all with attention to cost and schedule - characterized Alward Construction work on both projects.
