SMITH-HUSEBY: ADDITION
(under $100,000)
2002 NARI Bay Area Merit Award
In the 1950s the owners added a small one-story library at the southwest corner of the house, entered through the living room. It was not a successful addition.
Challenges
- The exterior finish of redwood siding and the 50-ish windows were architecturally inconsistent with the exterior of the house.
- A library door providing access to the outdoors firewood storage severely limited the useable shelf space and made the library a pass through.
- In an earlier remodel Alward converted an outside deck into a home office, used primarily by the husband. The wife also wanted an office on the bedroom floor.
Solutions
- We replaced the redwood siding and 50-ish windows with elements matching the original building.
- We removed the library's exterior door and provided easy access to firewood by constructing a metal lined wood box next to the fireplace with both interior and exterior locking doors.
- We constructed an office on top of the library entered from the master bedroom. The dormer treatment for the windows resulted in a good match with the existing second floor.
