HOLUB: ADDITION ($100-$250,000)

2001 NARI Region 7 CoTY Award

The Holubs wanted a writing studio on top of their garage. They wanted it to have a 12:12 pitch to match their main housed designed by the famed Berkeley architect, Walter Ratcliff. If the studio walls were 8 feet, the 12:12 pitch would create a roof 4 feet above the zoning height limit.

Solution

The exterior walls were lowered to the point where they virtually disappeared, making the structure nearly all roof. Creating gables for all four sides, maximized the interior space and provided an architecturally unique complement to their classical main house.

Features

The studio featured a gas fireplace with tile hearth, exquisite interior natural wood trim, oak hardwood flooring, a half bath, a kitchenette, 4 corner closets (for machine room, file room, information tech room, storage room), antique fixtures, custom windows and doors.
